South Dakota CDL: Hazardous Materials Practice Test

Not quite. The answer is Both of the above

A material’s hazard class reflects the risks associated with it. There are nine hazard classes. Class 6 includes poisonous materials (6.1) and infectious substances (6.2).

Not quite. The answer is 3,000 gallons of liquid methane

Under federal regulation 49 CFR 385.403, to transport certain amounts of certain types of hazardous materials, a carrier must obtain a Hazardous Materials Safety Permit (HMSP) from FMCSA. The hazardous materials whose transport requires an HMSP are the following: (1) Any quantity of Class 7 radioactive materials (2) More than 55 pounds of Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 explosives (3) Any amount of Division 1.5 explosives that requires placarding (4) More than 1 liter or 1.08 quarts of a material that is poisonous by inhalation and meets the criteria for hazard zone A (5) A material that is poisonous by inhalation, is in bulk packaging, and meets hazard zone B (6) At least 3,500 gallons of a material that is poisonous by inhalation and meets hazard zone C or D (7) Compressed or refrigerated liquid gas (such as methane or natural gas) in bulk packaging with a capacity of at least 3,500 gallons There must be a copy of the HMSP in the CMV that is transporting the materials. (Note: This topic is not usually found in the official state CDL handbook.)

Not quite. The answer is The shipper, all carriers, and the receiver

The Hazardous Waste Manifest must be signed by every agency involved in the transportation of the hazardous waste: the shipper, every carrier who transports it, and the receiver. After you deliver the shipment, keep your copy of the manifest.

Not quite. The answer is to communicate the risk posed by the hazardous materials.

Placards are signs posted on the outside of the vehicle to warn others that the vehicle is carrying hazardous materials. These signs identify the hazard class of the cargo.

Not quite. The answer is remove the tire and place it a safe distance from the vehicle.

An overheated tire is more prone to blowing out. Remove it and place it at a safe distance from the vehicle. Don't drive until you find out what caused the tire to overheat.

Not quite. The answer is Generic shipping name

The letter 'G' means the hazardous material described in Column 2 is a generic shipping name. A generic shipping name must be accompanied by one or more technical names in parentheses on the shipping paper. A technical name is the name of a specific chemical that makes the product hazardous.

Not quite. The answer is bulk packaging permanently attached to your vehicle.

Cargo tanks are tanks that are permanently attached to a commercial vehicle. There are many different styles for transporting a variety of different materials.

Not quite. The answer is explosives C, flammable solids, or oxidizers.

Corrosive liquids can give off dangerous hydrogen gas if they come into contact with metal containers. Some corrosive liquids are themselves flammable. Don't load corrosive liquids next to or above anything that can cause or worsen a fire or explosion. Section 9.4 contains a complete list of hazardous materials that you should NOT load together with corrosive liquids.

Not quite. The answer is No. The regulations may change.

The official state CDL manual contains all the information you need to know to pass the HazMat endorsement knowledge test. However, times change. Government and industry regulations for dealing with hazardous materials can change over time. Even after you obtain your HazMat endorsement, you'll need to keep up with those changes. (For example, in 2001, the PATRIOT Act became law, requiring HazMat drivers to be fingerprinted and undergo an extensive criminal background check.) Government regulations require training of all drivers involved in transporting hazardous materials. Your employer or a designated representative is required to provide you this training. You can also obtain and study a copy of Title 49 (transportation) of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Also study your state's regulations.

Not quite. The answer is a place that has been approved for parking unattended vehicles carrying explosives.

The term "safe haven" refers to a place created by local authorities where you can safely leave your truck unattended while it holds explosive materials. This solves a trucking dilemma that has often led drivers to make risky decisions, such as driving through the night so that they could stay with their loads.

Not quite. The answer is $50,000

If there is an incident involving hazardous materials, you or your employer must call the National Response Center if any of the following have occurred: death or injury requiring hospitalization; more than $50,000 in estimated property damage; evacuation of the general public for more than one hour; the closure of a major road for more than one hour; damage to or spillage of radioactive substances; damage to or spillage of infectious agents; or any other incident that the carrier believes is dangerous enough to be reported.

Not quite. The answer is Medicines, food flavorings

A material’s hazard class reflects the risks associated with it. There are nine hazard classes. However, some materials, such as medicines and food flavorings, are regulated but present only a limited hazard. Hence, they may not belong in any of the nine hazard classes. Note: Despite what your state CDL manual may claim, anthrax is caused by a bacterium, not a virus.

Not quite. The answer is All of the above are major differences.

The major differences between cargo tanks and portable tanks are about the permanence of cargo tanks. Since cargo tanks are permanently attached to commercial vehicles, they are filled while on the vehicles, and they do not need to display the owner's name separately. Portable tanks are loaded and unloaded while they are off the vehicle. Portable tanks are then put on a vehicle for transportation. They must display the owner or lessee's name.

Not quite. The answer is Only during an emergency, to protect life or property

Normally, when your vehicle is carrying hazardous materials, you must attach the appropriate placards to the vehicle before you drive it. You are allowed to move an improperly placarded vehicle only during an emergency, to protect life or property.

Not quite. The answer is The driver

At any time, states or counties can impose new rules on the permits you must have or new restrictions on the routes you may take. As the driver, you must keep up with these changes and work with the carrier to obtain any needed permits.

Not quite. The answer is look at the shipping papers.

If you need to know whether a shipment contains hazardous materials, just check the shipping papers, which should have hazardous materials clearly marked. (In the event of an accident, first responders will also check the shipping papers to find out what materials they're dealing with.)

Not quite. The answer is must be signed by each carrier transporting the shipment.

A hazardous waste manifest acts as a record of everyone who has been involved in its shipment. Each copy must have all needed signatures and dates, including those of the person to whom you delivered the waste.

Not quite. The answer is 9

There are nine different hazard classes. The table "Hazardous Materials Class" in your state CDL handbook lists the types of materials in these hazard classes.

Not quite. The answer is Do not allow smoking or fire near the vehicle.

If your vehicle is carrying explosives and collides with another vehicle, warn others of the danger. Keep bystanders away. Do not allow smoking or open fire near the vehicle. If there is a fire, warn everyone of the danger of explosion. Remove all the explosives before separating the two vehicles. (Good luck!) Place the explosives at least 200 feet from the vehicles and any occupied buildings.

Not quite. The answer is 30 days.

If a hazardous material is released, resulting in death, hospitalization, over $50,000 in property damage, or other major problems, the driver or carrier must phone the National Response Center immediately. The carrier must also submit a written report to the National Response Center within 30 days of the incident.
