Arkansas CDL: Hazardous Materials Practice Test

Not quite. The answer is 3

A material’s hazard class reflects the risks associated with it. There are nine hazard classes. Class 3 hazardous materials include flammable liquids and combustible liquids. Acetone, gasoline, and methanol are examples.

Not quite. The answer is Do both of the above.

If there is an emergency involving the hazardous materials that you're transporting, follow all instructions that your employer gave you. Keep bystanders away, preferably upwind, while warning them of the danger. Try to keep open flames away and don't let anyone smoke near the hazardous materials. Take a copy of your shipping papers with you to provide to first responders who arrive at the scene.

Not quite. The answer is The name of a hazardous material used in scientific journals and texts, recognized as its chemical or microbiological name

The technical name is one used by scientists, which appears in journals, articles, and technical handbooks. It provides a standard terminology for dangerous substances, instead of slang terms that can vary (to dangerous effect) from region to region.

Not quite. The answer is 4 psi.

One of the most common types of cargo tanks is the DOT-406, typically used for fuel delivery. A semi-truck with a DOT-406 mounted to the semitrailer is commonly called a "gasoline truck." DOT-406 tanks have a low maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) of 4 psi.

Not quite. The answer is It provides technical information about the physical properties of hazardous materials.

The Chemical Transportation Emergency Center (CHEMTREC) offers technical assistance in the event of an incident involving hazardous materials. CHEMTREC has a 24-hour toll-free phone number that you can call. CHEMTREC was created to provide emergency personnel with technical information about the physical properties of hazardous materials. The National Response Center and CHEMTREC are in close communication. If you call either one, they will tell the other about the problem when appropriate.

Not quite. The answer is Toxic Gases

Your CDL Handbook includes Placard Tables 1 and 2. Division 2.3 (Toxic Gases) is in Placard Table 1. Any amount of hazardous materials listed in Placard Table 1 must be placarded. Class 3 (Flammable Liquids) and Class 8 (Corrosives) are in Placard Table 2. Except for bulk packaging, the materials in Placard Table 2 must be placarded only if the total amount transported is 1,001 pounds or more, including the packages.

Not quite. The answer is Only when it is a non-placarded material

You must have a hazardous materials endorsement on your CDL to drive a vehicle that is placarded for hazardous materials. However, not all packages of hazardous materials require placarding your vehicle. For example, relatively small quantities of consumer-grade chemicals such as drain openers and bleaches may be exempt. Federal regulation 49 CFR 172.500 exempts certain amounts and types of hazardous materials from placarding, but states may impose more stringent requirements. Check with the Arkansas Department of Transportation.

Not quite. The answer is Call emergency personnel if needed.

Never try to repack leaking containers. Unless you have the training and equipment to repair leaks safely, don't try it. Call your dispatcher or supervisor for instructions and, if needed, emergency personnel. If an accidental release of hazardous materials results in death, hospitalization, over $50,000 in property damage, or other major problems, you or the carrier must phone the National Response Center immediately.

Not quite. The answer is a place that has been approved for parking unattended vehicles carrying explosives.

The term "safe haven" refers to a place created by local authorities where you can safely leave your truck unattended while it holds explosive materials. This solves a trucking dilemma that has often led drivers to make risky decisions, such as driving through the night so that they could stay with their loads.

Not quite. The answer is MC-331

MC-331 cargo tanks carry gases that are liquefied under relatively high pressure (maximum allowable pressure of 100–500 psi). The cargo tank has a circular cross section and rounded ends. These tanks are commonly used to carry such gases as propane and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Not quite. The answer is Division 6.1

Never transport Division 2.3 materials (poisonous gases) or Division 6.1 materials (poisonous materials) in containers with interconnections. Also, never load any package containing poisons in the driver's cab or sleeper or together with foods for human or animal consumption.

Not quite. The answer is The carrier

When placarded radioactive materials must be transported, it's the carrier's job to choose the safest route. After choosing the route, the carrier must tell the driver about the radioactive materials, and show the driver the route plan.

Not quite. The answer is Dynamite, fireworks

A material’s hazard class reflects the risks associated with it. There are nine hazard classes. Class 1 hazardous materials are explosives, including dynamite, flares, display fireworks, ammunition, blasting agents, and explosive devices.

Not quite. The answer is Hazardous Materials Regulations apply only if the material is shipped by water.

In the Hazardous Materials Table, the letter "W" in Column 1 means that the hazardous material described in Column 2 is subject to the Hazardous Materials Regulations only if the material is offered or intended for transportation by water, unless it is a hazardous substance, hazardous waste, or marine pollutant. The federal Hazardous Materials Regulations are in 49 CFR §§ 171–180.

Not quite. The answer is stop at the nearest safe place and fix it.

Don't risk an accident from a flat tire, especially when carrying hazardous materials. If you have a leaking or flat tire, don't drive except to the nearest safe place to fix it. Note: The rules on parking placarded vehicles apply even if you park to fix or replace a tire. For example, if you're carrying explosives, you can't park (to fix a tire or for any other reason) within 300 feet of any place where people gather.

Not quite. The answer is Only during an emergency

Attach the appropriate placards to the vehicle before you drive it. You are only allowed to move an improperly placarded vehicle during an emergency, in order to protect life or property.

Not quite. The answer is 20 feet long.

An ISO standard portable tank is a metal tank enclosed in a steel frame. The frame is 19.8556 feet (6.05 meters) long, 7.874 feet (2.40 meters) wide, and either 7.874 feet (2.40 meters) high or 8.374 feet (2.55 meters) high.

Not quite. The answer is remove the tire and place it a safe distance from the vehicle.

An overheated tire is more prone to blowing out. Remove it and place it at a safe distance from the vehicle. Don't drive until you find out what caused the tire to overheat.

Not quite. The answer is indicates the degree of control needed during transportation.

A package of radioactive materials is not fully radiation proof. Some radiation can pass right through the package, possibly contaminating its immediate environment. The transport index of a package of radioactive material describes the highest level of radiation (in millirems per hour) that is expected at a distance of one meter (about 39.37 inches) from the surface of the package. With this information, the package can be kept safely far enough away from other packages, photographic film, live animals, or people (including yourself).

Not quite. The answer is you have placed the explosives at least 200 feet away from the vehicles and any occupied buildings.

If your vehicle is carrying explosives and collides with another vehicle, warn others of the danger. Keep bystanders away. Do not allow smoking or open fire near the vehicle. If there is a fire, warn everyone of the danger of explosion. Remove all the explosives before separating the two vehicles. (Good luck!) Place the explosives at least 200 feet from the vehicles and any occupied buildings.
