Missouri CDL: Hazardous Materials Practice Test

Not quite. The answer is Class 7 (radioactive materials)

Class 7 (radioactive materials) must be controlled by a transport index that tells each transport company and truck driver how much they can carry. The radiation given off by radioactive materials can contaminate the rest of the load.

Not quite. The answer is Turn it off before unhooking the hoses.

Keeping your engine on while you pump a load of compressed gas adds extra risk. As soon as the delivery is completed, turn off the engine before you unhook any hoses.

Not quite. The answer is Both of the above

A material’s hazard class reflects the risks associated with it. There are nine hazard classes. Class 6 includes poisonous materials (6.1) and infectious substances (6.2).

Not quite. The answer is keep all people far away and upwind of the accident.

If you have an accident while carrying hazardous materials, you must follow your employer's instructions. However, keep bystanders well away and upwind of the accident for their own safety.

Not quite. The answer is three

Federal, state, and county regulations on the handling of hazardous materials can change at any time, and HazMat workers need to keep up with those changes. Federal regulation 49 CFR 172.704 requires every HazMat employee to be retrained every three years. This includes training in his or her employer's security plan. If the employer changes the security plan, it must train the employee about the changes within 90 days.

Not quite. The answer is a place that has been approved for parking unattended vehicles carrying explosives.

The term "safe haven" refers to a place created by local authorities where you can safely leave your truck unattended while it holds explosive materials. This solves a trucking dilemma that has often led drivers to make risky decisions, such as driving through the night so that they could stay with their loads.

Not quite. The answer is 300 feet

When driving with a load of Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 hazardous materials, which are explosives, you must park at least 300 feet away from any bridge, tunnel, or structure. You must maintain the same distance from any gathering place or open fire.

Not quite. The answer is Close all manholes and valves. Be sure they are free of leaks.

Before you start to drive a vehicle with a cargo tank containing hazardous materials, make sure that the manholes and valves are closed and leak-free. It is illegal to move a cargo tank containing any amount of hazardous materials for any distance if any valves or covers are open.

Not quite. The answer is Do both of the above.

If there is an emergency involving the hazardous materials that you're transporting, follow all instructions that your employer gave you. Keep bystanders away, preferably upwind, while warning them of the danger. Try to keep open flames away and don't let anyone smoke near the hazardous materials. Take a copy of your shipping papers with you to provide to first responders who arrive at the scene.

Not quite. The answer is take the appropriate steps to protect yourself and the public.

In the event of a hazardous materials emergency, take appropriate steps to keep people safe (including yourself). Limit the spread of hazardous materials, but only if you can safely do so. Let emergency response personnel know about the dangers posed by the hazardous materials. Then provide emergency responders with the shipping papers and emergency response information.

Not quite. The answer is have a written route plan and follow that route plan.

To transport explosives, you must usually follow a route plan prepared by the carrier. One exception is if you pick up the explosives at a location other than your employer's terminal. In that case, you should create and follow your own route plan.

Not quite. The answer is must put the word "WASTE" before the proper shipping name of the material on the shipping paper.

A shipper of hazardous wastes must put the word "WASTE" before the proper shipping name of the material on the shipping paper (hazardous waste manifest). Federal regulations require shippers to put hazard warning labels on packages and provide proper shipping papers, emergency response information, and placards, regardless of whether the material being shipped is waste.

Not quite. The answer is The carrier

The carrier accepts responsibility for transporting the shipment. Before transport, the carrier must check that the shipper has correctly labeled and packaged the hazardous materials. The carrier should refuse to accept any package that is incorrectly labeled or packaged.

Not quite. The answer is Yes, but only if the nitric acid is not loaded above any other materials.

Nitric acid is a liquid in Class 8 (Corrosives). Nitric acid is also a strong oxidizing agent. It can react with many other chemicals and start fires. Hence, as a safeguard against leaks or spills, nitric acid should not be loaded above any other product. There are additional restrictions on which classes of hazardous materials may be loaded in the same vehicle with corrosive liquids. See your CDL Handbook for details.

Not quite. The answer is Diamond

Hazardous materials placards must be readable from all four directions. They must be at least 9.84 inches (250 mm) square, square on point, in a diamond shape. ("Square on point" refers to a square that has been rotated 45 degrees so it is balanced on one corner, forming a diamond shape.)

Not quite. The answer is Yellow III

A package of radioactive materials is not completely radiation proof. Some radiation can pass through the package. There are three different diamond-shaped "RADIOACTIVE" labels that can be affixed to a package of radioactive materials: White I, Yellow II, and Yellow III (in Roman numerals), depending on how much radiation is detectable at the surface of the package. Yellow III packages have the highest detectable radiation level at the package surface. (Note: This topic is not usually found in the official state CDL handbook.)

Not quite. The answer is eight

The Hazardous Materials Table lists every type of material (over 3,000 so far) that the US Department of Transportation has designated as a hazardous material for the purpose of transportation. This table is a reference for shippers and carriers. There are eight columns in the Hazardous Materials Table that deal with road transportation, describing the name of the material, its hazard class, its identification number, and so on. Consult the Missouri Commercial Driver License Manual for details.

Not quite. The answer is not attempt to control the fire.

If you discover a fire in your vehicle, call the fire department. If it's a minor fire, you can try to use your fire extinguisher to keep the fire from spreading to the hazardous materials before firefighters arrive. But if the hazardous materials have caught fire, don't attempt to control that fire yourself. Dealing with hazardous materials fires requires special training and protective gear. Instead, keep the cargo doors closed to deprive the fire of additional oxygen, and wait for the firefighters to arrive.

Not quite. The answer is on the property of the shipper, carrier, or receiver.

Someone else can watch your vehicle only if you are on the shipper's, carrier's, or consignee's property, because those are the people who know the dangers and how to deal with them.

Not quite. The answer is The manufacturing date of the material

You do not need to know when a product was manufactured or expires unless your company has an additional responsibility. You do need to know the amount of the hazardous material being shipped, its hazard class, and the total amount of all the hazardous materials of all classes that will be carried on your commercial vehicle during your trip.
