Michigan CDL: Passenger Vehicles Practice Test

Not quite. The answer is it must be closed whenever the bus is in motion.

Emergency exits must be closed whenever the bus is in motion. If an emergency exit has a red emergency exit light, it should be turned on whenever conditions require you to turn on your headlights.

Not quite. The answer is Yes, but only up to 100 pounds.

Many hazardous materials cannot be carried on a bus. These include any amounts of Division 2.3 poison gases, liquid Class 6 poisons, or tear gas; or more than 100 pounds of solid Class 6 poisons. Also, buses may never carry explosives (except small-arms ammunition) or radioactive materials in the space occupied by people. Finally, buses may not carry more than a total of 500 pounds of allowed hazardous materials, and no more than 100 pounds of any one class.

Not quite. The answer is All of the above

When arriving at the destination or intermediate stops, announce in a clear voice: the location, the reason for stopping, the next departure time, and the bus number.

Not quite. The answer is at intersections.

Bus accidents often happen at intersections, where there are many drivers and pedestrians doing different things. Use caution at intersections even if there are signs or signals that are supposed to control traffic. Also use caution at railroad crossings. Buses are required to stop at railroad crossings.

Not quite. The answer is Your stopping distance quadruples if you double your speed.

You need about four times as much stopping distance when travelling at 40 mph compared to 20 mph.

Not quite. The answer is Shift your attention back and forth, near and far.

While driving your vehicle, look ahead a full 12–15 seconds. Be aware of what is happening all around your vehicle, both farther from it and closer to it. Keep shifting your attention back and forth, near and far, left and right, so that you can constantly scan all these areas.

Not quite. The answer is before the trip.

Many charter and intercity carriers have passenger comfort and safety rules. At the start of the trip, tell the passengers about the rules on smoking, drinking, or use of personal electronic devices. Explaining the rules at the start will help avoid trouble later on. While driving, keep an eye on the passengers. Remind them if you see them breaking the rules.

Not quite. The answer is No, not in space occupied by people.

Passenger buses can carry up to 100 pounds of each class of hazardous materials and up to 500 pounds total. However, there are some exceptions. Division 2.3 (poison gas) and liquid Class 6 (poison) cannot be carried in any amounts. Explosives and radioactives cannot be carried in the passenger area. Riders sometimes board a bus with an unlabeled hazardous material. Do not allow riders to carry on common hazards such as car batteries or gasoline.

Not quite. The answer is You should avoid traveling alongside other vehicles whenever possible.

Whenever another vehicle is traveling alongside yours, there's always a chance that the vehicle might try to move into your lane and accidentally hit your vehicle. Also, the vehicle is blocking you from changing lanes. It's safer to find an open spot where there are no vehicles on either side of you. (Of course, that may not be possible in heavy, congested traffic.)

Not quite. The answer is the defects listed on it have been certified as either repaired or not needing to be repaired.

Don't sign a previous driver's inspection report unless the defects listed on it have been certified as either repaired or not needing to be repaired. You will, of course, perform your own pre-trip inspection.

Not quite. The answer is Yes.

Not quite. The answer is The driver must engage in a conversation with the riders while driving.

Avoid fueling your bus with riders on board unless it is absolutely necessary. Never refuel in a closed building with riders on board. Don’t talk with riders, or engage in any other distracting activity, while driving.

Not quite. The answer is wait for a sufficient gap.

You should know the size of the gap that your bus needs to accelerate and merge with traffic. Before leaving the bus stop, wait for a large enough gap to open. Never assume other drivers will brake to give you room when you signal or start to pull out.

Not quite. The answer is close any open access panels.

As you check the outside of the bus, close any open emergency exits. Also, close any open access panels (for baggage, restroom service, engine, etc.) before driving.

Not quite. The answer is may be unsafe for a bus.

The posted speed for a curve may be safe for cars but too fast for buses. With good traction, the bus may roll over; with poor traction, it might slide off the curve. If your bus leans toward the outside on a banked curve, you are driving too fast. The safest way to take a curve in a bus is to slow down before the curve and then accelerate slightly through the curve.

Not quite. The answer is All of the above must be true.

Make sure that the aisles and stairwells are clear, the handles, handholds, and railings are securely fastened, and all emergency exits are closed and secured. Signage must be visible. If there is a red emergency door light above the emergency exit, it must work properly and be turned on whenever you use your headlights.

Not quite. The answer is slow down.

When switching from high-beam lights to low beams, slow down, since you will not be able to see as far in front of you.

Not quite. The answer is after completing the lane change.

You must start signaling before changing lanes and cancel the turn signal when the lane change is complete.

Not quite. The answer is 500 pounds.

Buses may carry small amounts of certain hazardous materials such as small-arms ammunition and consumer commodities marked "Limited Quantity" (formerly "ORM-D"). Buses may not carry more than 100 pounds of any class or more than 500 pounds total.

Not quite. The answer is If you turn on your headlights, you don't need to turn on the red emergency door light.

If an emergency door has a red emergency exit light, it must work properly. However, you only need to turn it on when visibility is poor enough that you have switched on your headlights (such as at night or in poor weather).
