Illinois CDL: Passenger Vehicles Practice Test

Not quite. The answer is All of the above

The North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria includes the following critical inspection items for passenger vehicles, such as buses and passenger vans: (1) All required emergency exits must be present, fully operative, and unobstructed. (2) No passenger seats may be loose. (3) There must be no bare cables exposed in the battery compartment or engine compartment. (In this context, a cable is the power-conveying part of a high-wattage or high-voltage electrical system.) If any of these critical criteria are not met, your bus can be put out of service.

Not quite. The answer is may be locked in a partially open position.

You may lock roof hatches into a partially open position to provide fresh air. However, don't leave them open all the time. When open, they add to the bus's height, which can pose problems when driving through an underpass with low vertical clearance.

Not quite. The answer is before the trip.

Many charter and intercity carriers have passenger comfort and safety rules. At the start of the trip, tell the passengers about the rules on smoking, drinking, or use of personal electronic devices. Explaining the rules at the start will help avoid trouble later on. While driving, keep an eye on the passengers. Remind them if you see them breaking the rules.

Not quite. The answer is Behind the driver's seat

Some buses are designed to allow passengers to stand. These buses must have a means of showing passengers that they cannot stand forward of the driver's seat. One way is to have a standee line, a two-inch-wide line on the floor just behind the driver's seat.

Not quite. The answer is properly labeled.

The rules require shippers to mark containers of hazardous materials with the material’s name, identification number, and a hazard label.

Not quite. The answer is not shift gears

If your bus has a manual transmission, do not shift gears while crossing a raised railroad crossing. Shifting gears on a raised railroad crossing increases the chance that your vehicle will stall and get stuck on the tracks.

Not quite. The answer is 50 feet

Stop at drawbridges that do not have a signal light or traffic control attendant. Stop at least 50 feet before the draw of the bridge and look to make sure the draw is completely closed before you proceed across.

Not quite. The answer is Slow to a safe speed before entering the curve, then accelerate slightly through it.

The safest way to take a curve is to slow down before the curve and then accelerate slightly through the curve. Braking in a curve risks a skid.

Not quite. The answer is as safe as possible, or the next stop.

A drunk or disorderly passenger may be discharged from the bus, but only at the next scheduled stop or a well-lit area with other people for the passenger's safety.

Not quite. The answer is All of the above requirements must be met.

Carry-on baggage must not be left in doorways or aisles because someone could trip over it or it could block the way to an emergency exit. Carry-on luggage must be stowed so it can't restrict the driver's movements or injure passengers if it falls or shifts.

Not quite. The answer is in front of the standee line.

Buses that allow passengers to stand must have some way to show passengers that they must stand behind the driver. This can be a two-inch-wide line (called the standee line) on the floor behind the driver's seat.

Not quite. The answer is don't talk with riders.

While driving, stay focused on the driving task. Keep an eye on your riders, but don't talk with them or engage in any other distracting activities.

Not quite. The answer is 500 pounds

Buses may carry small amounts of certain hazardous materials, such as small-arms ammunition labeled "Limited Quantity," emergency hospital supplies, and drugs. Buses may not carry more than 100 pounds of any hazard class or more than 500 pounds total.

Not quite. The answer is slow down.

When switching from high-beam lights to low beams, slow down, since you will not be able to see as far in front of you.

Not quite. The answer is it must be secured while the bus is being driven.

Emergency exit doors and windows must be securely closed whenever the bus is moving. Signage must be visible. If there is a red emergency door light above the emergency exit, it must work properly and be turned on whenever you use your headlights.

Not quite. The answer is may be unsafe for a bus.

The posted speed for a curve may be safe for cars but too fast for buses. With good traction, the bus may roll over; with poor traction, it might slide off the curve. If your bus leans toward the outside on a banked curve, you are driving too fast. The safest way to take a curve in a bus is to slow down before the curve and then accelerate slightly through the curve.

Not quite. The answer is wait for a sufficient gap.

You should know the size of the gap that your bus needs to accelerate and merge with traffic. Before leaving the bus stop, wait for a large enough gap to open. Never assume other drivers will brake to give you room when you signal or start to pull out.

Not quite. The answer is safe for cars in good weather.

Each curve has a safe "design speed," which is its safe speed for cars in good weather. However, at that speed, a bus is more prone to rolling over. And it may not be safe for any vehicles to travel at that speed in bad weather. In particular, a bus could go sliding right off the road. For safety on curves, slow down below the posted speed. If your bus is leaning outward on a banked curve, you are driving too fast.

Not quite. The answer is only if getting off the bus would be more risky for the riders.

Passengers should not be aboard a bus while it is being towed unless it would be more dangerous for them to exit the vehicle. Passengers can remain aboard the bus only until it is towed or pushed to the nearest safe location.

Not quite. The answer is 500 pounds.

Buses may carry small amounts of certain hazardous materials such as small-arms ammunition and consumer commodities marked "Limited Quantity" (formerly "ORM-D"). Buses may not carry more than 100 pounds of any class or more than 500 pounds total.
