Alabama CDL: Passenger Vehicles Practice Test

Not quite. The answer is properly labeled.

The rules require shippers to mark containers of hazardous materials with the material’s name, identification number, and a hazard label.

Not quite. The answer is Allow much more space than is needed under ideal driving conditions.

The usual formula for following distance under ideal conditions is one second for every ten feet of vehicle length, plus an extra second if you are traveling at over 40 mph. The only thing the CDL manual says about following distance on slippery roads is that you should allow "much more space to stop." The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recommends doubling your usual following distance under poor driving conditions.

Not quite. The answer is 5 seconds

The formula for following distance is one second for every ten feet of vehicle length, plus an extra second if you are traveling over 40 mph. Therefore, for a 40-foot vehicle traveling at 50 mph, you should leave a following distance of 40/10 + 1 = 5 seconds.

Not quite. The answer is No, because it may distract the bus driver from driving.

Conversations with passengers represent a distraction from the driving task. The bus driver should avoid all potential distractions while driving the bus. The only real way to treat feelings of sleepiness is with sleep.

Not quite. The answer is in the aisles.

Carry-on baggage must not be left in doorways or aisles because someone could trip over it or it could block the way to an emergency exit. Carry-on luggage must be stowed so it can't restrict the driver's movements or injure passengers if it falls or shifts.

Not quite. The answer is Yes.

Passenger buses can carry up to 100 pounds of each class of hazardous materials and up to 500 pounds total. However, there are some exceptions. Division 2.3 (poison gas) and liquid Class 6 (poison) cannot be carried in any amounts. Explosives and radioactives cannot be carried in the passenger area.

Not quite. The answer is driving safely and transporting passengers safely.

You must have a passenger (P) endorsement on your CDL to drive a vehicle with 16 or more occupants including yourself. To obtain this endorsement, you must meet several requirements including passing a knowledge test and a skills test in a vehicle that is representative of the class of vehicle you will be driving professionally. The knowledge test covers safe commercial driving and safe transportation of passengers. These subjects are covered in chapters 2 and 4 of the Alabama Commercial Driver License Manual. Note: If you plan to drive buses with air brakes, you must also pass a knowledge test and skills test on air brakes. Otherwise your CDL will include restriction L, prohibiting you from operating vehicles with air brakes.

Not quite. The answer is the defects listed on it have been certified as either repaired or not needing to be repaired.

Don't sign a previous driver's inspection report unless the defects listed on it have been certified as either repaired or not needing to be repaired. You will, of course, perform your own pre-trip inspection.

Not quite. The answer is Tear gas

Buses may carry small amounts of certain hazardous materials such as small-arms ammunition and consumer commodities marked "Limited Quantity" (relatively small quantity of hazmat; formerly "ORM-D"), emergency hospital supplies, and drugs. Buses are prohibited from carrying chemical weapons such as tear gases or poison gases.

Not quite. The answer is flash your brake lights to let the drivers behind you know that you are stopping.

You may have to stop on the roadway to load or unload passengers. In such situations, warn following drivers by flashing your brake lights. Do not stop suddenly.

Not quite. The answer is It depends on the state.

There is no national requirement for coach buses to stop at permanent weigh station locations. Instead, each state can set its own rules. As of March 2021, there are 24 states in which coach buses must stop at weigh stations, at least under certain circumstances.

Not quite. The answer is While crossing, don't shift gears if your bus has a manual transmission.

You must stop at every railroad crossing except those marked "exempt" or "abandoned." If your bus has a manual transmission, do not shift gears while crossing a raised railroad crossing. Shifting gears on a raised railroad crossing increases the chance that your vehicle will stall and get stuck on the tracks.

Not quite. The answer is All of the above

Buses may carry small amounts of certain hazardous materials, such as small-arms ammunition labeled "Limited Quantity" (formerly "ORM-D"), emergency hospital supplies, and drugs. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, federal regulation 49 CFR 37.167 allows a passenger with a disability to bring portable oxygen equipment on board for medical use. Extra medical oxygen cylinders can be stowed in a baggage compartment, if they are designed for personal use.

Not quite. The answer is before the trip.

Many charter and intercity carriers have passenger comfort and safety rules. At the start of the trip, tell the passengers about the rules on smoking, drinking, or use of personal electronic devices. Explaining the rules at the start will help avoid trouble later on. While driving, keep an eye on the passengers. Remind them if you see them breaking the rules.

Not quite. The answer is You must be able to stop within the distance that you can see ahead.

You should know the safe driving speeds for your vehicle under both ideal driving conditions and poor driving conditions. The posted speed limits on curves are safe for cars under ideal driving conditions, but not necessarily safe for large vehicles like buses. On a curve, you may have to slow down below the posted speed.

Not quite. The answer is at a streetcar crossing

You must stop at a red light, a stop sign, a railroad crossing, or whenever a flagperson (flagger) signals you to stop. At a streetcar crossing, at a crossing marked as “exempt” or “abandoned,” or wherever a police officer or flagger is signaling you to proceed, slow down and carefully check for other vehicles.

Not quite. The answer is as safe as possible, or the next stop.

A drunk or disorderly passenger may be discharged from the bus, but only at the next scheduled stop or a well-lit area with other people for the passenger's safety.

Not quite. The answer is Yes, if it's medically prescribed and in a container designed for personal use.

Riders sometimes board a bus with an unlabeled HazMat. Do not allow riders to carry on common hazards such as car batteries or gasoline. Oxygen medically prescribed for, in the possession of a passenger, and in a container designed for personal use is allowed.

Not quite. The answer is All of the above must be true.

Make sure that the aisles and stairwells are clear, the handles, handholds, and railings are securely fastened, and all emergency exits are closed and secured. Signage must be visible. If there is a red emergency door light above the emergency exit, it must work properly and be turned on whenever you use your headlights.

Not quite. The answer is 50 feet

At drawbridges without a traffic attendant or light signal, you must stop at least 50 feet before the draw of the bridge. If there is a green light or a traffic attendant present, you don't have to stop, but you must slow down and make sure that the drawbridge is closed and safe to drive on before you proceed across it.
