West Virginia CDL: Hazardous Materials Practice Test

Not quite. The answer is The shipper

The shipping paper describes the hazardous material and its quantity, among other things. The shipper must fill out the shipping paper because the shipper packages the material. Only the shipper knows exactly what's inside the package. Except in an emergency, no one else should open the package to see what's inside until the package is delivered to the receiver.

Not quite. The answer is have a written route plan and follow that route plan.

To transport explosives, you must usually follow a route plan prepared by the carrier. One exception is if you pick up the explosives at a location other than your employer's terminal. In that case, you should create and follow your own route plan.

Not quite. The answer is B

Marine pollutants are chemicals that are toxic to marine life. Marine pollutants, including severe marine pollutants, are listed in Appendix B to the Hazardous Materials Table. Appendix A is the List of Hazardous Substances and Reportable Quantities. There is no Appendix C or Appendix D.

Not quite. The answer is 10 B:C

All placarded vehicles are required to have a fire extinguisher with a minimum UL rating of 10 B:C. That is, it must be able to extinguish a 10-square-foot class B fire (which includes almost all flammable liquids) and be electrically non-conductive (hence its C rating).

Not quite. The answer is 2

A material’s hazard class reflects the risks associated with it. There are nine hazard classes. Class 2 includes various gases: flammable gases (2.1), such as propane; non-flammable gases (2.2), such as helium; and toxic gases (2.3), such as compressed fluorine.

Not quite. The answer is Any of the above

Under federal regulation 49 CFR 171.16, you must submit a Hazardous Materials Incident Report if an unintentional release of hazardous materials occurs. You must also submit a Hazardous Materials Incident Report if any of the following incidents occurs, even if hazmat is not released: (1) a reportable incident (death, injury, evacuation, etc.) occurs; (2) the lading retention system of a cargo tank containing hazmat is damaged; (3) undeclared hazmat is discovered; or (4) a fire, violent rupture, explosion, or dangerous evolution of heat occurs that might damage the packaging of the hazmat. Note: The "lading retention system" of a cargo tank consists of those items or pieces of equipment that provide containment of the hazmat.

Not quite. The answer is At the start of each trip and every time you stop

If you have a placarded trailer with dual tires, you should check the tires at the start of each trip and each time that you stop for any reason, whether to rest or to refuel. Use a tire pressure gauge to get an accurate reading.

Not quite. The answer is poisons.

Federal regulation 49 CFR 184.680 stipulates that you cannot place Division 6.1 materials (poisons) in the same cargo space as foodstuffs intended for animal or human consumption. The risk of contaminating the foodstuffs is unacceptable. Also, federal regulation 49 CFR 177.848 stipulates that certain hazardous materials, such as poisons, cannot be placed in the same cargo space as other hazardous materials because of the risk of cross-contamination or a dangerous chemical reaction. Some of these rules can be found in the Do Not Load Table in the West Virginia Commercial Driver's License Manual.

Not quite. The answer is MC-306 (DOT-406)

MC-306 (DOT-406) cargo tanks carry liquids under very low or no pressure (maximum allowable pressure of 3 psi for MC-306 and 4 psi for DOT-406). The cargo tank has an oval or elliptical cross section and is usually compartmented. These tanks are commonly used to carry gasoline, diesel fuel or fuel oil, and other flammable liquids.

Not quite. The answer is Radioactive Materials

A material’s hazard class reflects the risks associated with it. There are nine hazard classes. Class 7 materials are radioactive materials. These include radioactive metals, ionization smoke detectors that contain the isotope Americium 241, medical and scientific isotopes, and spent nuclear fuel.

Not quite. The answer is any more than safety requires.

You don't want to leave a trail of hazardous materials behind you as you drive. The carrier will have to pay for the cleanup of any contaminated areas, which can be very expensive. Minimize the extent of the contamination. Move your vehicle only enough to ensure the safety of the general public. Then park your vehicle. Your vehicle and its cargo are still your responsibility, so stay with your vehicle and send someone else to get help.

Not quite. The answer is Any of the above

Federal regulation 49 CFR 392.10 states that CMVs transporting any of the following must stop at all railroad crossings: (1) Most hazardous materials that require placarding (see the regulation for details). (2) Any amount of chlorine. (3) A cargo tank that is used to carry hazmat, even if it is currently empty. (4) A cargo tank containing a substance whose temperature at the time of loading was already above its flashpoint.

Not quite. The answer is cargo heaters have been disabled.

Ideally, you should not risk exposing any type of hazardous material to flame, but especially Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 (explosives), Division 2.1 (flammable gases), or Division 3 (flammable liquids). These can be so volatile that they should not be exposed to any heat source, not even a cargo heater.

Not quite. The answer is Class 8

Your CDL Handbook includes Placard Tables 1 and 2. Division 2.3 (Toxic Gases) and Division 4.3 (Dangerous when Wet) are in Placard Table 1. Any amount of hazardous materials listed in Placard Table 1 must be placarded. Class 8 (Corrosives) is in Placard Table 2. Except for bulk packaging, the materials in Placard Table 2 must be placarded only if the total amount transported is 1,001 pounds or more, including the package.

Not quite. The answer is display POISON placards in addition to any other required placards.

If the words "INHALATION HAZARD" appear on the shipping paper or package, your vehicle must display the POISON INHALATION HAZARD or POISON GAS placards, as appropriate. These placards must be used in addition to any other placards that may be required by the material's hazard class or division.

Not quite. The answer is Yellow III

A package of radioactive materials is not completely radiation proof. Some radiation can pass through the package. There are three different diamond-shaped "RADIOACTIVE" labels that can be affixed to a package of radioactive materials: White I, Yellow II, and Yellow III (in Roman numerals), depending on how much radiation is detectable at the surface of the package. Yellow III packages have the highest detectable radiation level at the package surface. (Note: This topic is not usually found in the official state CDL handbook.)

Not quite. The answer is Inform someone and do not load the battery acid.

Silver cyanide and battery acid are on the list of materials that cannot travel together for safety reasons. (See the "Do Not Load" table in section 9.4 of the AAMVA Commercial Driver's License Manual.) Silver cyanide is a Division 6.1 material (poison). It cannot be loaded with acids because their mixture can release hydrocyanic acid, which is extremely poisonous.

Not quite. The answer is both of the above.

Hazardous materials placards must be at least 9.84 inches (250 mm) square, square on point, in a diamond shape. ("Square on point" means a square that has been rotated 45 degrees so it is balanced on one corner, forming a diamond shape.) Each placard must have a solid line inner border approximately 12.5 mm inside and parallel to the edge.

Not quite. The answer is Both of the above

A material’s hazard class reflects the risks associated with it. There are nine hazard classes. Class 6 includes poisonous materials (6.1) and infectious substances (6.2).

Not quite. The answer is you have placed the explosives at least 200 feet away from the vehicles and occupied buildings.

If your vehicle is carrying explosives and collides with another vehicle, warn others of the danger. Keep bystanders away. Do not allow smoking or open fire near the vehicle. If there is a fire, warn everyone of the danger of explosion. Remove all the explosives before separating the two vehicles. (Good luck!) Place the explosives at least 200 feet from the vehicles and any occupied buildings.
